A minor pentatonic scale is a five note scale (penta meaning five) with a numeric formula of 1-♭3-4-5-♭7-8/1 (no second or sixth degrees) and is very widely used in blues, jazz, rock and pop styles, along with traditional music from around the world, although many use different variations of the pentatonic scale. As it is an easy scale pattern to play and memorize, it is frequently the first scale a guitarist will learn which likely accounts for it's popularity.
